This hike is perfect from people who love the mountains as during this tour, we will appreciate the cultural and natural richness of the Cuscqueñan Andes. Meetings with authentic Quechua communities, the beautiful Vilcanota mountain range and the imposing Ausangate mountain make this trek an extraordinary experience. Meeting with local people dressing in their traditional clothing and looking after their flocks of alpaca and llama is not uncommon.
Today’s hike is short and will serve as an extra day day to help the body acclimatize to the altitude. We will leave Cusco for Tinki where we will take a short break and have the opportunity to buy fruit, snacks or water that we need for teh hike. We will then continue by vehicle to Upis, where our team of mule handlers and pack animals will be waiting for us. Once all the equipment is packed on the animals, we will start the hike, carrying only our personal backpacks with snacks, water and personal items. We will stop for lunch on the way and then, once at camp, have the chance to soak in the hot springs before dinner.
We will wake with the first rays of sun for a long, challenging day, in which we have to climb two very high mountain passes. After breakfast we will start the hike, ascending to Arapa pass. From there we descend to Pucacocha (a lake) where we will take a break and eat lunch. From there, we start ascending again to Apuchata pass, which will challenge our physical strength and stamina. The imposing mountains watch over us as we go and we will pass flocks of llamas and alpacas as we finally descend to camp at Laguna Ausangate.
Today we will climb up to the Palomani Pass, from where the views of Ausangate and the Vilcanota mountain range is absolutely incredible. We will take a brief break here, before beginning the descent to Huchuyfinaya where we will spend the night..
Today is a day of incredible scenery as we cross the Qampa pass, where we will be surrounded by various big mountains including Tinky, Caracol, Pukapunta and the Callangates. During the descent, we will hike past different coloured lagoons and flocks of llama and alpaca. Once we get to Pacchanta in the afternoon, we will have the chance to enjoy the thermal waters as we rest before dinner..
The last day involves a hike through local communities where you can see what their daily life is like. We end the hike in Tinky, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Cusco.
