We will leave Cusco and take the road towards Abancay. We will leave the city behind and cross the high plain of Anta, from where we can see the snow peaks of Salcantay y Humantay. We then start to depend from the high plain towards Limatambo where we will see the Apurimac Canyon for the first time. After a short stop in Curawasi, we will continue to Capuliyoc where we will meet our team of mule handlers and pack animals. After packing our equipment on the animals, we will start the hike descending into the canyon.
We will wake with the first rays of sun to start a challenging day. We start the ascent on a switchbacks to the hamlet of Marampata, where we will eat lunch. From this point we can enjoy views of the Apurimac canyon and the vegetation that surrounds us. The rest of the day’s hike is mostly on flat terrain to the campsite at Choquequirao.
Today is dedicated to visiting the incredible archaeological site and exploring its different sectors. Many people do this hike in just four days, so don’t have the time to explore the site in such depth, since the ruins are spread out on both sides of the mountain. We will take our time enjoying this beautiful place and then return to camp for lunch. Afterwards, we will continue to the next campsite.
After breakfast, we will visit the terraces of Pinchaunuyoc, before we continue our descent to the White River (Rio Blanco), where we will rest and refresh. Afterwards we will face another ascent via switchbacks to Maizal, where we will camp tonight.
Today we will be accompanied once more by the abundant flora and fauna as we hike an original Inca trail towards abandoned silver mines. We will hike over the San Juan and start to descend towards Yanama, our next camp.
We start the day with a restorative breakfast and afterwards, we will pack our bags and begin the descent towards the Yanama River. From here, we will ascend for around two hours to a pass, before we will hike along the mountainside, surrounded by abundant vegetation, on an Inca trail, little transited by other tourists. Before we arrive at the campsite, we will pass Inca canal systems which were created to worship water.
We will wake up surrounded by native Queuña forests and rocky mountains as we eat breakfast. We then start the ascent towards the Choquetecarpo high pass. The whole day is spent on truly impressive Inca trail with hundreds of stone steps and beautiful scenery, which will make this day really memorable. We will end the hike in the town of Huancancalle where we will spend the night.
After a short but intense hike, we will arrive to Vitcos, the center of the exiled neo-Inca state in Vilcabamba, a site which is visited by very few foreigners. During your guided visit, you will learn about the place that served as the Inca capital for 7 years during the resistance to the Spanish invasion. You will also explore Yuraqrumi, a curiously carved rock and Inca Terraces that show fine workmanship. After the visit, you’ll return to Huancancalle to board the vehicle which will bring us to Aguas Calientes.
On the last day of our unforgettable adventure, we will visit Machu Picchu, the architectural jewel of the Inca Empire. We will spend plenty of time visiting this wonder of the world, before we return to Aguas Calientes to take the train to return to Cusco.
