Ausangate Mountain is situated in the Vilcanota mountain range in the Peruvian Andes. It reaches 6,384m.a.s.l. in elevation and has been considered by the people of the región as a sacred “Apu” (mountain deity) since time immemorial. It is the fifth tallest mountain in Peru but isn’t technically very difficult to climb, but does require a good level of physical fitness due to the long approach and high altitude.
We will depart from Cusco at 7am headed towards the town of Pitumarca, where we will stop briefly and have the opportunity to purchase fruit or other necessary items. You Afterwards, we will continue towards Chilca, where our team of pack animals and handlers, who will take charge of the heavy gear for the ascent. Once the equipment is loaded onto the animals, we will start the approach hike, carrying our personal belongings, water and snacks. The hike to base camp will take around 3 hours and on arrival, we will set up camp and enjoy the scenery and the peak above, while we wait for our delicious dinner to be prepared.
Today we will hike up to the Pequeño Mariposa glacier which will help us to continue acclimatizing and get ready to climb the mountain with confidence. Today is also a back up day when we can start climbing if predicted bad weather would otherwise stop the attempt.
After breakfast, we will start the ascent to Morrena Camp. This part of the ascent will take around 4-5 hours and once in Morrena camp, we will set up the tents and spend the rest of the day resting to get ready for the climb day.
We will wake up at 12:30am to start the climb. After crossing an area of crevasses, we reach a wall about 200m high and 60-70°. Once we have climbed the wall, we will start a glacier crossing that will take around 4 hours before we reach the summit. The descent is via the same route, including rappelling down the 200m wall. Once we get to Morrena camp, we will rest and pack up to return to base camp for the night.
After a good night’s rest and a restorative breakfast, we will break up camp and start the walk to Chilca, where our vehicle will be waiting to bring us back to Cusco.
