Qampa Mountain is situated in the Vilcanota mountain range in the Peruvian Andes. It reaches 5,500m.a.s.l. in elevation, and is a spectacular viewpoint from which to appreciate the mountain range and its big mountains like Ausangate, the Cayangates and Mariposa and other titans. Due to its closeness to the Qampa high pass, the access to the glacier is easy, ideal for beginners or for experienced mountaineers who are looking for an easy ascent at high altitude to help with acclimatization. During the whole trip, you will be surrounded by beautiful Andean scenery and flora and fauna typical of the area.
We leave Cusco at 7 in the morning, heading towards to the town of Tinke, where we will make a brief stop, to make any final purchases, such as fruit or water that you might need for the hike. Afterwards, we will continue to the community of Pacchanta, where we will meet our mule handlers and pack animals who will take care of the heavier equipment. After packing up the gear, we will start walking, carrying just your personal belongings, water and snacks. We will hike around two hours to the Laguna Verde where we will take a break to eat our boxed lunches. Afterwards, we will continue to base camp, where we will set up camp and enjoy the beautiful scenery, looking up at the summit which is tomorrow’s objective, while we wait for dinner.
We will wake up at 3.30am to eat a light breakfast, before starting the hike to the glacier with our personal equipment, backpacks and headlamps. Once on the glacier, we will get kitted up with technical gear and begin the ascent of around three hours to the summit. After some time to enjoy the spectacular view of the Vilcanota mountain range, we will start our descent towards base camp where we will have lunch and spend the rest of the day resting.
After breakfast, we will break down camp and start the three hour walk to Pacchanta. On arrival, we’ll have the chance to take a refreshing soak in the thermal baths and enjoy lunch before heading back to Cusco.
